Mentor Board

The mentor board at Silicon Valley Growth is composed of senior executives, successful entrepreneurs and academic professionals.  The board provides four vital services to increase the safety, velocity, and growth of our partnerships. They:

  • Act as our eyes and ears to identify investment targets
  • Step forward on a case by case basis to assist with due diligence
  • Aadvise our portfolio companies as needed
  • Accelerate the expansion of our companies to foreign markets.

Dr. Lee Chartock, is an active investor in early stage companies.  His interest and expertise includes life sciences, IT, media and consumer product companies.   He has recently invested in such companies as Corbus Pharmaceuticals (OTC:CRBP), QView Medical, Stream TV Networks, EngageClick, Embee Mobile and Galuku. He has also acquired pre-IPO positions in Twitter and Palantir.

Dr. Chartock graduated from Brown University with an Sc.B (Phi Beta Kappa), received his MD from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, and an MPP from the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.  His awards and honors include the Dupont Warren Fellowship, Department of Psychiatry, Harvard University and Kennedy Fellowship, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.

Dr. Chartock, served on the national clinical advisory boards-neuroscience for GlaxoSmithKline, Pfizer, Lilly, Novartis, Searle, Forest Labs, Wyeth-Ayerst and Bristol-Myers/Squibb.  Lee divides his time between Massachusetts and California, and is involved in the angel communities on both coasts.

Dr. Ben Gavish A native of Israel, Dr. Ben Gavish is the Editor in Chief of two global academic journals:

  • The Electronic Commerce Research Journal
  • Telecommunication Systems.

This involvement allows him to review the latest ideas and trends affecting eCommerce. He is a leading expert on Fraud and Trust on the Internet, as well as other topics including “Supply Chain Planning”,  and “Production Scheduling.”

His recent published work includes, Reducing Internet Auction Fraud, Communications of the ACM, Vol. 51, No. 5. (May 2008), pp. 89-97, Hard Limits on the Growth of the Internet and Computing Capacity, International Journal of Information Science and Management, 2010 (1), pp. 1—14.

Dr Gavish holds three degrees from the Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, and has taught at the University of Rochester, William E Simon School of Business (www.simon.rochester.edu) as well as Vanderbilt University’s Owen Graduate School of Management (www.owen.vanderbilt.edu). He currently holds the Eugene Constantin, Jr. Distinguished Chair in Business at Southern Methodist University.

Dr. Rebecca Homkes is currently faculty at the London Business School (LBS) and its Executive Education program, where she focuses on strategy execution; the interaction of leadership, management and management practices in driving performance; and how organizations create and maintain shared context. She regularly leads strategy summits and workshops with multinational firms, teaches related courses, is directing the global Active Learning Program (ALP) with a set of Young Presidents Organization (YPO) companies, and consults several multinational companies on enhancing their execution capacity.

She is also a Fellow at the London School of Economics’ Centre for Economic Performance (CEP), and has directed the joint McKinsey & Co/ CEP Global Management Project since 2007. A Marshall Scholar, she received her PhD from the LSE in International Political Economy. Dr. Homkes also earned an MSc from the LSE in International Political Economy and was an Indiana University’s top graduate in 2005 and its sole Herman Wells Scholar, where she earned a BS (Honors) in Business Administration with majors in finance, accounting and international studies alongside a BA (Honors) in Political Science. She previously served as a fellow at the White House’s President’s Council of Economic Advisors and has worked in management and strategy consulting for Bain & Co. as well as public policy consulting and on Capitol Hill.

Ronald L Ramseyer, is the founding President & CEO of Macy’s Direct for Federated Department Stores, the former President of Bass Pro Shops, and Senior Vice President at Talbots for direct marketing credit / loyalty programs, and store expansion. Ron is invaluable in evaluating prospective investments, especially in the consumer space, both online and social media.    Once investments are made, his ability to mentor and coach is unsurpassed.

Ron earned his MBA from the University of Chicago and his undergraduate degree from Northwestern. He and his wife Penny and dog Gracie live in Duxbury, MA

Mr Paul McKeon:  is a technology marketing expert with nearly 30 years driving results for technology companies, ranging from well-known brands to startups.  During the 1990’s, at the helm of Crescent Communications the agency he founded,  he handled many of the US marketing efforts for technology stalwarts such as Nokia, IBM Software, Hitachi and many others. In 1997, he sold his agency to Ketchum and assumed the leadership of Ketchum’s Global Technology Group where he managed nearly 200 marketing and public relations professionals and led engagements with a wide range of technology companies, including Yahoo, Intuit, IBM, FedEx, Visa and others.  Since 2004, he has been heading up The Content Factor, an Atlanta based content marketing agency with a specialization in eCommerce, Supply Chain Management, Healthcare and financial services businesses.

Paul has an economics degree from Princeton and an MBA in finance from Vanderbilt.

Dr. Candida Brush is the holder of the Franklin W. Olin Chair in Entrepreneurship at Babson College in Boston, MA.   An active member of the famous Boston Harbor Angels, she is known for her pioneering research in women’s entrepreneurship. Her research investigates resource acquisition, strategy and financing of new ventures and is invaluable to many of the SVG portfolio companies.    Candy is often featured  in leading business media including the Wall Street Journal, Business Week, the Boston Globe and Inc.  She is a regular blogger on Forbes.com

When not teaching at Babson Dr. Brush travels globally and is a visiting professor at the Nordlands University Graduate School of Business in Norway.

Mr. Wesley T. Wood resides in Long Island, New York, where he serves as a President of Marketing Capital Corporation, marketing consulting and investment company providing specialized consulting services to the direct response and specialty retailing industry in eleven countries. He is the co-Founder of Candlelite Music, Country Music Magazine, Hamilton Mint, Marketing Capital Corp and Invest National Bank.

Mr. Wood serves as a member of the Executive Committee to the Board of Advisors for the Center of Direct Marketing at New York University; Trustee for St. Dominick’s R.C. Church; Board Member of Intervest Corporation (Real Estate), Intervest Bank (Florida Commercial Bank); and Member or the Trustees Advisory Committee at Fairfield University in Connecticut.

In the past Mr. W. Wood has had widespread general marketing experience in the fields of packaged goods (Ballantine Beer, La Rosa Spaghetti, Visine Eye Drops), real estate, banking, insurance, and closed-circuit sport promotions including marketing of the Boston Celtics Basketball team.

He has since concentrated on Direct Response Marketing. From 1972 to 1981, he was Co-Founder and President of Candelite Music, Inc. and Candelite Collectors Society. Candelite was the largest independently owned direct marketer of records and tapes in the United States and Canada. He was also owner and publisher of Country Music Magazine.

From 1968 to 1972, Mr. Wood served as Executive Vice President; Member of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of Downe Communications, Inc. Downe published Ladies’ Home Journal, Family Weekly, Sports Magazine and various other publications. The company also owned and operated radio stations and many direct marketing companies. During this time, Mr. Wood co-founded The Hamilton Mint, which became the second largest private mint in the United States during the early seventies.

Wesley T. Wood earned his BS degree (1965) from New York University.

Lee Zieben, President, The Zieben Group, for over a decade, Lee has been an award-winning residential developer and builder of single family and multifamily projects with a cumulative value of over $200 million. An experienced investor in high-tech and hospitality businesses, Lee will be SVG’s “eyes and ears” in the city of Houston to seek out new investment opportunities and investors.

His operating company, the Zieben Group has a earned a quality reputation as an environmentally conscious, high quality real estate development and investment company. Zieben currently has several projects located throughout Texas, including one of the nation’s first complete reconstructions of a Section Eight multifamily project at the LEED Platinum level.

Lee currently serves as an active board member of the C Club of Houston, Houston Business Education Coalition, a mentor to the Silicon Valley Growth Venture Fund and Pro Unitas. He previously served as board co-chair for Texas Southern University’s Jones School of Business, a board member of the University of Houston’s College of Technology and chairman of the Houston 2012 Olympic technology committee and the Texas Exes technology committee. In 2004 the Governor appointed him to the Texas Online Authority, the world’s largest e-government portal.

Mr. Paul Lacey , consultant to the Firm, has held senior marketing positions for leading corporations in several verticals including: Toys/Games, Liquor/Liqueurs/Cognac, Direct Marketing/Delivery/Logistics/Fulfillment, CRM/BI Systems Integration, Database Marketing Services/Software and Direct/Digital Marketing/Advertising Agency Services.

He focuses on direct/digital marketing integrating multi-channel/multi-device technology with data to execute business-to-business/business-to-consumer results-driven measurable marketing campaigns for publicly traded corporations, privately held organizations and early stage entrepreneurs.

 Mr. David Vulcano is responsible for all Clinical Research at 163 hospitals and 109 freestanding surgery centers owned by Hospital Corporation of America (HCA). He has held this position since 2007. David is the founding president of the Nashville, Tennessee Angel Capital Group. An experienced Investor, his investments include Ardent Health Systems, LLC.  David’s expertise and experience allows SVG to evaluate investment opportunities in healthcare and biotech.
