beGlammed, American Airlines Magazine

beGlammed’s mission is to become the global leader of on-demand beauty services delivering a personal beauty team to clients anywhere, anytime.

The rundown

American: So what exactly is beGlammed?

Maile: beGlammed, LLC is the leading on-demand beauty service that delivers professional hairstylists and makeup artists straight to your door. Clients can book a personal beauty team to get pampered on-demand in the comfort of their home, office, hotel, or any other location. beGlammed is the go-to hair and makeup provider for everyone from working professionals, students, and busy mothers to brides, jetsetters, and celebrities.

The team

American: Tell us about the beGlammed team.

Maile: Once I founded beGlammed, a mutual friend introduced me to our investors, David Kiger and Rebby Gregg. Once they learned more about my mission for beGlammed, they recognized the potential of the business and believed in my vision for growth.

American: What did you do before founding beGlammed?

Maile: I have been in the beauty and fashion industry for over a decade. Before founding beGlammed, I worked for MAC Cosmetics as the Artist Relations Specialist, a position that I uniquely pioneered and established for the company.

My background includes beauty marketing and sales, corporate sponsorships, tradeshow production, and relationship building with power players in the beauty industry.

Inspiration strikes

American: How did you come up with the concept for beGlammed?

Maile: While out to dinner with a friend one evening, she expressed to me how frustrating it is to find great stylists to accommodate her hair and makeup needs while traveling. She complained about spending countless hours calling salons and retail locations while searching online to no avail. Out loud, she wished there were an easy, more convenient way to find a stylist (preferably one who would come directly to her). It was then I had my aha-moment. I recently had downloaded the Uber app and was frequently using their car services. The on-demand concept is a brilliant one, and I decided to combine the ease of booking with the ability to connect people with talented beauty professionals.

The niche

American: What is the advantage for customers to use beGlammed over similar services?

Maile:  beGlammed services more cities than any other on-demand beauty app. Rather than adhering to a menu of predesigned looks, our clients have the ability to customize their hair and makeup with their stylists. We also have extremely flexible scheduling options. Our stylists are available around the clock and can accommodate requests at any time.  Clients can book our services from several months in advance to last minute.  Lastly, we offer three pricing options based upon the experience level of the stylists, ensuring we can cater to each individual client’s budget and needs.

Accessibility

American: Where is beGlammed available?

Maile: We currently offer services in the U.S. and Canada, including Los Angeles, New York City, Las Vegas, Miami, San Francisco, Orange County, San Diego, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, Austin, Palm Beach, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Toronto.

By the end of February 2016 we will add Atlanta, Boston, Orlando, and Nashville and plan to add additional markets in the U.S. and internationally throughout the rest of the year.

American: How do you market beGlammed to reach new customers?

Maile:  Along with traditional social media and digital marketing, PR and press initiatives, and brand alliances, we place a strong focus on events. We frequently have a presence at A-list events to do on-site activation. Our makeup artists provide touchups for the guests, while our hairstylists do light styling and braids. It’s a fantastic way to reach our target demographic while showcasing our talent and what it is that we do.

Startup Success

American: What is your biggest struggle as a startup?

Maile: Since the tech industry is constantly changing and evolving, it often can be difficult to keep up with the updates needed to successfully function while staying relevant and ahead of our competition. Some of these updates can be implemented quickly, but others can take more time.

American: What one piece of advice would you give someone wanting to start a new business?

Maile: It’s an upward climb to get to the top with many seemingly impossible humps along the way. No matter how hard things may seem, never give up or take no for an answer. Keep your eye on the prize!

American: What are your goals for beGlammed in the future?

Maile: Our goal for the next year is to add new features to the app and website to increase user interaction and create an incredible user experience. We are also focusing on expansion to additional markets to become the authority for on-demand beauty not only in the U.S. but internationally as well.  We also plan to add additional services, including spray tanning, nails, massages, and eyelash extensions, and sales of beauty products.

American: Do you have any interesting stories about how travel has had an interesting impact on your business?

Maile: In our business, every seat mate is a potential client!  It’s always great to spread the word about new cities we have launched, and given how fast the on-demand beauty space is growing, most people are excited to hear all about it.  With as much as we fly and as fast-paced as a start-up is, inflight wi-fi is critical to help keep up with everything on the ground.
